Five minutes with… Hayley Blanchard, National Team Leader at Mansions

Q. When did you join Mansions of Australia and what does your role entail?
A. I joined Mansions in September 2021 as part of the team that moved across from AIG when Mansions acquired the renewal rights to AIG Australia’s high and ultra-high net worth private clients business. In my new role as National Team Leader, I’m responsible for driving the underwriting culture of the team, which is focusing on writing quality, profitable business. I'm also responsible for the day-to-day management of the team, and the continued integration of the AIG portfolio into the business.

Q. Have you always worked in the insurance industry?
A. After graduating from business college I applied for a job at Chubb, but it wasn’t an active decision to go into the insurance industry. I joined Chubb as an office administrator in 2006, and as I got to know the business, I thought that the HNW insurance space looked interesting. Soon after a role opened up as an assistant underwriter in the Masterpiece team at Chubb, which I applied for and got. In 2007 I moved across to AIG, which was establishing its Private Client Group business, and progressed there from assistant underwriter to underwriter and then senior underwriter.

Q. What is the most interesting HNW collection you’ve underwritten and do you have any HNW collections of your own?
A. Even though I've been working in the same product area for my entire career there's literally not a day that goes by where you don't get a new scenario or something you've never seen before. We insure celebrities, CEOs, politicians and Rich Listers and it’s such a privilege to be trusted with information about their assets and security. We see some weird and wonderful things, and it’s rubbed off on me a little bit as my husband and I have started to collect some art, which is something we’re both interested in although it doesn’t compare to some of the art collections we’re trusted to insure at Mansions!

Q. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
A. Whenever I'm not working I'm trying to wrangle our new puppy, and I’ve got a six year old son who takes up a lot of my time. I also love to do yoga and I'm very interested in gardening, although I'm not very good at it! I like to travel so I’m looking forward to that again as international borders reopen following COVID-19.

Q. What’s something most people probably don’t know about you?
A. If I wasn't working in insurance, I think I’d probably be working as a naturopath. I’m very interested in massage therapy and alternative natural therapies and considered studying naturopathy at one point. I'm actually a bit of a hippie, which my team knows but it’s something that always surprises people who have only ever known the corporate side of me.
